WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION AT BGSIHM
World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment, that resulted from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. One year later, in 1973, the first World Environment Day was held with the theme “Only One Earth”.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, is a global platform for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment. Each year, World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. Past themes have included air pollution, plastic pollution, and wildlife conservation. This thematic focus helps to direct efforts and resources towards solving specific environmental problems.
The theme for World Environment Day 2024, ‘Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,’ underscores the importance of restoring degraded land and building resilience to droughts and desertification. It highlights the critical role that land plays in sustaining life and fostering biodiversity.
This year’s theme, under the slogan ‘Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration,’ calls on individuals, communities, and governments worldwide to take action to restore and protect our land for future generations. It emphasizes the collective responsibility we share in ensuring the health and well-being of our planet.
It is celebrated in Educational Institutions to raise environmental awareness among the students, encourage sustainable practices, and promote active participation in environmental conservation. It aims to educate the academic community about the importance of protecting and preserving our natural resources.
